RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
