Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
