Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
